The GC Central Asia Children’s Book Club, facilitated by OSCE Academy staff member Nazgul Kadyrova, held its third meeting with a focus on stories of loss, resilience, and hope. During the session, participants read and discussed Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Lynn Williams and The Diary of Anne Frank, two impactful works that highlight the experiences of children affected by war and displacement.
Young readers opened the meeting with short presentations introducing the books to their peers, sparking thoughtful reflections on courage, survival, and empathy. The session began with an interactive “dictation race,” using an excerpt from Anne Frank’s diary to encourage teamwork and focus.
Participants then explored how literature can deepen our understanding of the realities faced by displaced children and those living through armed conflict. In small groups, they created short “news reports” from the perspectives of refugees, journalists, and humanitarian workers—showcasing impressive creativity, empathy, and critical thinking.
The meeting concluded with a brief informational segment on the global situation of displaced children and the role of storytelling in raising awareness about humanitarian issues.
The Club’s final meeting will take place in December. Many young participants have already expressed sadness about the project coming to an end and shared how much they enjoyed gathering monthly, even asking whether similar activities could continue in the future.
