The Global Campus Central Asia is proud to announce that Ms. Uulzhan Bekturova, a graduate of the MA in Human Rights and Sustainability (MAHRS) programme, has been selected as a recipient of the Global Campus Alumni Grant (2024–2025) for her upcoming project addressing the human rights implications of environmental disasters in Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh.
Uulzhan’s project will explore the impact of severe flooding on marginalized communities, with a particular focus on children. Through field research, interviews, and photo documentation, the initiative aims to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate-related disasters. The findings will be showcased in a public photo and testimonial exhibition in Bishkek, accompanied by a panel discussion on climate justice featuring local environmental activists and experts.
As part of the project, Uulzhan will also conduct an exclusive interview with Right Livelihood Laureate Juan Pablo Orrego, offering valuable insights into environmental activism and the role of youth in advocating for sustainable change.
Funded by the Global Campus of Human Rights, the Alumni Grant supports collaborative, cross-regional projects that advance human rights through research, advocacy, and public engagement. Uulzhan’s project will run until July 2025 and will culminate in the publication of a long-read journal article detailing the outcomes and recommendations stemming from the initiative.
The Global Campus Central Asia warmly congratulates Uulzhan on this significant achievement and looks forward to supporting and sharing the progress of this impactful work.
