MAHRS Student Navruz Erkaev Represents Central Asia at the 5th World Congress on Justice with Children in Madrid

We are proud to announce that Navruz Erkaev, a student of the MA in Human Rights and Sustainability (MAHRS) 2024–2026 cohort, represented the Global Campus Central Asia at the 5th World Congress on Justice with Children, held from 2 to 4 June 2025 in Madrid, Spain.

The Congress, held under the theme “Promoting child-centred justice: preventing and responding to violence against children in child justice systems,” convened over 1,000 in-person participants and thousands more online. The event brought together a diverse community of policymakers, legal professionals, academics, civil society actors, and children themselves from across the globe.

Hosted by the Spanish Government through the Ministry of Youth and Children, the Congress was co-led by the Global Initiative on Justice with Children—a coalition formed by Terre des hommes Lausanne, Penal Reform International, the International Association of Youth and Family Judges and Magistrates (IAYFJM), and the Global Campus of Human Rights.

The three-day event featured plenary sessions, interactive workshops, and satellite events designed to foster knowledge exchange and actionable policy recommendations. Key issues discussed included:

  • Preventing violence against children in justice systems,

  • Reforming justice policies to ensure child-centred and rights-based approaches,

  • Ending child detention, and

  • Integrating neuroscience-informed perspectives in judicial proceedings involving children.

Navruz Erkaev’s participation reflects MAHRS’s ongoing commitment to preparing future human rights professionals who actively engage in global platforms. His presence also underscored the increasing contribution of Central Asia to international human rights discourse—particularly on justice systems that uphold the dignity and rights of children.
